Could Paul Pierce Go Back to Boston?

Paul Pierce is expected to either re-sign with the Washington Wizards or head out west to join the Los Angeles Clippers this summer, but could Pierce’s old team make a play for him? Supposedly that’s on the table:

Woj’s follow-up made it sound like Pierce’s interest in returning to Boston would be contingent on the Celtics landing Kevin Love:

Now, Love is expected to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers even after opting out of his contract, but Boston is a destination he’s supposedly willing to consider if he wants to leave. The Celtics will have a ton of cap space, so a trio of Love, Pierce and Robin Lopez could theoretically work, although that certainly doesn’t seem as enticing as staying in Cleveland.

As for that part of the second tweet about the Clippers trying to offer bench guys to gain a trade exception for Pierce, that scenario isn’t all that plausible to play out. A salary dump of Jamal Crawford‘s $5.68 million contract for next year (guaranteed $1.5 million) could create a trade exception big enough for Pierce to sign-and-trade into, but that would hard cap Los Angeles at about $85 million. If the Clippers want to max out DeAndre Jordan, that hard cap can’t happen.
