Adam Johnson of D-League Digest reports that the NBDL will hold an expansion draft for its three new teams on August 24. Next season, the Greenboro Swarm (Charlotte Hornets affiliate), Windy City Bulls (Chicago Bulls affiliate), and Long Island Nets (Brooklyn Nets affiliate) will debut in the D-League. Johnson explains some of the draft rules:
According to multiple sources, the draft will be serpentine in form (draft order will reverse each round), with teams making 12 selections each. This number is down from previous seasons when new teams would select 16 players. The draft order has yet to be determined.
Existing D-League teams will only be able to protect 10 players apiece. This number is also down from previous years when teams could protect up to 12 players.
Johnson notes that just a single player taken in last year’s expansion draft for Raptors 905 (Toronto Raptors affiliate) actually ended up playing for the team: Scott Suggs. However, Suggs ended up being the team’s overall leading scorer, averaging 18.0 points in 36.0 minutes per game. (Suggs was a rotation player for the Minnesota Timberwolves at the just-concluded Las Vegas Summer League.)
Nets General Manager Sean Marks worked in the same role for the Austin Toros (San Antonio Spurs affiliate) for the 2012-13 season, when he signed current Memphis Grizzlies rotation player JaMychal Green as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Alabama.
