Sacramento Kings’ center DeMarcus Cousins is beginning his seventh season with the franchise and is continuing his original on-court emotional displays with the latest resulting in a fine. While it is certainly not the first, the $25,000 penalty in which he incurred didn’t take him long this season.

The Sacramento franchise player fouled out of Saturday evening’s 106-103 Kings win over the Minnesota Timberwolves but did not take it too well. After being whistled for a blocking foul, his sixth and final penalty, the mercurial Kings’ big man tossed his mouthpiece into the stands and went to retrieve it in the final minute of action at Golden 1 Center.

NBA executive vice president Kiki Vandeweghe didn’t reward Cousins’ supreme hand-eye coordination for spotting where the mouthguard landed – several rows up near the baseline – and retrieving it before walking to the Kings’ bench. In addition to the five-figure fine, Cousins was assessed a technical foul for throwing the mouthguard into the seats and entering the stands himself.

This was the Kings’ third game of the season and one that also featured Cousins picking up a previous technical foul. Although, the 26-year-old center’s reaction to being whistled for one in the second quarter was quite different from the first, with the 6-11, 270-pounder giving a thumbs-up to the official who whistled him for his first technical foul of the year.

Cousins, who did score 29 points and grab seven rebounds during the Kings’ home triumph, was whistled for 17 technical fouls last season, the most in the NBA. He is averaging 30 points and 9.7 boards per contest in three Kings’ games this season.
