The WNBA is back in full swing following the Olympic break, and the Chicago Sky’s Elena Delle Donne and Los Angeles Sparks’ Nneka Ogwumike earned the first Player of the Week honors following the long layoff. These awards covered the games played from Aug. 26-Sept. 4.
Delle Donne won the award for the second time this season by leading the Sky to a 4-0 record. She also led the WNBA in scoring over this span with 27.3 points per game to go along with 7.3 boards per contest.
Delle Donne went over 30 points in two of the four games as the Sky have surged up the standings to second in the Eastern Conference and fourth in the league.
Meanwhile, Ogwumike won the award for the fourth time in the last five weeks and fifth time overall this season. She averaged 21.0 points (best in the Western Conference), 8.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists in five games, although the mighty Sparks lost two of those games.
Los Angeles suffered another loss on Tuesday night after Ogwumike won this award. The loss was to the Minnesota Lynx, who took over the best record in the league from the Sparks with a 77-74 win. Ogwumike had another strong game, however, notching 19 points and eight rebounds in defeat.
