Former Iowa State Cyclones star and current member of the New Orleans Pelicans Bryce Dejean-Jones has passed away after bleeding out from a gunshot wound he suffered early Saturday morning.

Travis Hines of the Ames Tribune first reported the death, while The Vertical’s Shams Charania reported the cause of death.

The Pelicans have released a statement on the news:

Hines reported the news out of nowhere on Saturday afternoon after confirming the passing with the Dallas County (Texas) coroner office. While Hines initially reported that no cause of death was yet available, Charania reported the cause roughly 25 minutes after Hines’ initial reports. There are now multiple reports out with some of the details of what happened:

And here’s more indicating that Dejean-Jones went into the wrong apartment:

Only 23 years old, Dejean-Jones made it to the Pelicans after going undrafted in last year’s NBA Draft. At first he made it to the National Basketball Association by way of a 10-day contract. Over a period of time the Pelicans saw enough in him to keep his contract for the rest of the season.

Before playing for Iowa State, the talented Dejean-Jones had stops with the USC Trojans and UNLV Rebels before finishing off his collegiate career as a senior with the Cyclones.

Despite going undrafted and only initially getting the 10-day contract, the Pelicans signed him to a three-year deal in February. He was considered one of the best UDFA from last year’s group.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and anyone else who had their life altered by these events:
