Warriors Officially Purchase Land for New Arena

The Golden State Warriors have been in the process of purchasing a 12-acre area of land in Mission Bay, San Francisco, and the team announced the formal purchase of the land on Monday. That land will be used for a sports and entertainment complex that’s expected to be completed in time for the 2018-19 NBA season:

“The Warriors are making an unprecedented, $1 billion-plus investment in San Francisco,” said Rick Welts, President and COO of the Warriors. “We’re the only sports team in America doing this all with private funds, on private land, with no public subsidy.”

The Warriors, who’ve been playing in Oakland at Oracle Arena since 1971 after originally spending nine years in San Francisco, have been looking to get back to San Francisco for years. The team purchased an option on the private property in 2014 and will move forward with its plans now that it owns the land:

The new arena is expected to hold over 18,000 people and will be used for other events as well. There will also be plenty of other attractions around the arena, including restaurants, public plazas and a park.
