After stunning Canada in the semifinals of the FIBA Americas Championship, Venezuela pulled off another upset in the title game on Saturday night, beating Argentina 76-71 to earn the country its first ever tournament victory. The win also gives Venezuela its first Olympic berth since 1992.
Heissler Guillent led the way with 15 points, while John Cox had 14 and Windi Graterol added 11. Venezuela won the tournament despite missing its best player in Greivis Vasquez.
In the third-place game, new Toronto Raptor Cory Joseph was the hero in an 87-86 win over Mexico. Joseph buried a 20-footer at the buzzer to secure the victory:
Joseph had 11 points in the win. Andrew Nicholson led Canada with 20 points, while Andrew Wiggins had 18. Marco Ramos had 19 to pace Mexico. There will be no Olympic berth for either of these two teams, but they’ll have a chance to earn a spot in Rio in a qualifying tournament next summer.
