There have been rumblings the past few years that Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau doesn’t have the best relationship with team management. It began when Bulls general manager Gar Forman dismissed top Thibodeau assistant Ron Adams in the summer of 2013. Since then, there have been plenty of stories about discord that could ultimately lead to a parting of the ways. Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski had the latest example after the Bulls’ Game 1 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday.
Wojnarowski reiterated some of the known strife between Thibodeau and management, even saying Bulls management is “obsessed” with getting rid of the coach and that this playoff run is his “last stand.” Woj also used an anecdote about a Bulls assistant coach being worried about his office being bugged while having a conversation with a visiting scout who seemed to be confused by whatever was happening within the organization.
Whether that story is really true or not, there’s too much smoke for there not to be fire in regards to the whole situation. Thibodeau and management can call it “noise” all they want, but these stories are coming from somewhere, and it’s hard to believe there are just a bunch of people making things up.
As it stands, it truly does feel like this may be it for this group. Anything short of a Finals trip might not be enough to save Thibodeau’s job, and who knows if that’ll even do it. It really is unfortunate to have this kind of stuff swirling around during a playoff run, but the team seems to be doing a good job of tuning out the “noise.” They have a good chance of reaching the Finals, and who knows, perhaps they pull off an improbable title run.
