With all the craziness of NBA free agency and the 4th of July weekend going on, the Cleveland Cavaliers slipped in a new release that center Timofey Mozgov underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Thursday and will be out six weeks.
There was little sign that Mozgov was hurt throughout the Cavaliers’ run to the NBA Finals, so perhaps this was just an offseason cleanup (the news release called it a “debridement”) and he’ll be ready to roll next season. Cleveland picked up his $4.9 million option for next year, which will be one of the best bargains in the league.
Mozgov came over to the Cavaliers in a midseason trade from the Denver Nuggets and helped stabilize a struggling defense. The big man was instrumental in helping Cleveland reach the NBA Finals, and while there were times he was taken out of the game because of small ball, he also had several big performances against the Golden State Warriors.
