Monty Williams wasn’t out of a job for long. The former New Orleans Pelicans head coach has been snatched up by the Oklahoma City Thunder as the top assistant on the staff of new head coach Billy Donovan. ESPN’s Marc Stein first reported that a deal was close and Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski first reported that a deal had been reached on Tuesday night.
The Pelicans fired Williams last month after it looked like his job was safe by virtue of reaching the playoffs in the loaded Western Conference. New Orleans won 45 games and got into the postseason on the last day of the regular season by beating the San Antonio Spurs, only to get swept by the Golden State Warriors.
Apparently reaching the playoffs wasn’t enough for management, as Williams was fired and Alvin Gentry was brought aboard from Steve Kerr’s coaching staff in Golden State. Now Williams will help the first-time NBA head coach in Donovan in what will be a pressure-filled job in Oklahoma City thanks to the presence of Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka.
