The Starting 5: A look at some of the best hoops content around the Internet
When Andre Iguodala was with the Sixers, he was asked to be the star of the team. While he’s always been super-athletic and a very good defensive player, he’s not a star. He hasn’t been a very good outside shooter or an efficient scorer over the course of his career. But since signing with the Warriors, he’s found his role. He doesn’t have to be the star on a team that’s loaded with better players. And in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, Steve Kerr unleashed Iggy on LeBron James, allowing him to play his game. Iggy has been great in the series, and at this point might be the Finals MVP if the Warriors win the championship.
2. Chicago Bulls Offseason Checklist: How Tony Snell Can Improve His Game – James Davis, Bleacher Report
Tony Snell found it difficult at times to find playing time under Tom Thibodeau. He was just a second-year player this year, and he finally started to see some playing time during the season when guys like Kirk Hinrich, Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler and Mike Dunleavy all had to sit out with injuries. The guy that Joakim Noah has dubbed “Snelly Cat” (if you don’t remember the 90s well, you won’t get this reference) performed pretty well when trusted, but found his way to the bench again in the playoffs. Now with Fred Hoiberg running things, he has a chance at redemption.
Clippers center DeAndre Jordan had the best season of his career this year, and he’s about to be a free agent. There are plenty of rumors of teams that would be interested in one of the best defensive centers in the NBA, and why not? The Bucks, who just traded Ersan Ilyasova to the Pistons, are rumored to be pretty heavily interested. Doc Rivers has said he wants to keep the core of this team together, but that might mean signing Jordan to a max contract.
4. How Ersan Ilyasova affects the Detroit Pistons’ draft and free agency plans – Jason Brunskowski, Detroit Bad Boys
Speaking of Ilyasova, acquiring him from the Bucks was huge for the Pistons. He gives Andre Drummond a stretch 4 to complement his game in a way that Greg Monroe was never able to, despite his talents. Considering that the Pistons gave up Caron Butler and Shawne Williams in the trade, it frees up a lot of minutes at the small-forward position for the Pistons. It would be reasonable to assume that they might target a small forward in free agency or in the draft, and both places provide some decent options with that position.
In non-current NBA news, Robert Horry weighed in on some of the hate on LeBron for not being super-close with certain teammates. He thinks it’s no big deal. He played in seven seasons for the Lakers, much of that time with Phil Jackson as the coach. Horry tells the story of what he claims is his only off-court conversation he ever had with the Zen Master. True or not, Horry won seven NBA championships with three different teams. We can take his word for it when we’re discussing whether something is important or not for a team to be a winner.
