The Golden State Warriors start the regular season in one week against the New Orleans Pelicans, but it’s still not known when head coach Steve Kerr will return to the bench as he continues to recover from two offseason back surgeries, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein and Ethan Sherwood Strauss.
Kerr recently took an indefinite leave of absence so he could focus on his rehab. The first surgery was done in July to repair a ruptured disk in his back, but a second procedure was required to address spinal fluid leakage. The coach was with the team at the start of training camp before he decided to step away from coaching so he could get to 100 percent.
Kerr has been around the team more lately and hope remains he can be ready for the opener when the Warriors receive their championship rings, but there’s still no timetable for his return and the team is reportedly prepared for the possibility that it’ll be “a little while” before he comes back to the sidelines.
Luke Walton has been coaching Golden State with Kerr out. The Warriors are 2-3 in the preseason.
