ESPN New York’s Ian Begley reported Monday that the Detroit Pistons have shown interest in New York Knicks guard Tim Hardaway Jr., but that rumor has been denied by several Pistons sources, including Stan Van Gundy himself.
Van Gundy went as far as calling the rumor “fiction,” according to Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press, who denied the initial report through his own source:
“I said to Jeff today, ‘Who makes that up?'” Van Gundy said. “I’ve always wondered about things that we have never even had one discussion on. Like, does the writer make it up or does somebody else make it up and feed it to the writer? Like, who does the fiction writing and why? I’ve never quite understood that.
“Some things at least might be overblown just a little bit. There might have been a discussion somewhere in passing. Literally, if there’s been discussion of that it has not been with Jeff or I.”
Begley’s report talked about a possible trade that involved Brandon Jennings, who’s still recovering from an Achilles injury. It would also likely involve a pick swap of No. 4 (Knicks) and No. 8 (Pistons). This deal doesn’t make all that much sense from either side, and especially not from New York’s side. Plus, Van Gundy shut it down pretty firmly, so don’t expect this one to happen.
