Spurs Retain Danny Green on 4-Year Deal, Agree to Trade Tiago Splitter to Hawks

The Spurs are coming back (they always do), but this time, it appears it might be with major reinforcements.

First, they kept their top non-Tim Duncan free agent:

This was an interesting move, considering it was thought Green might have to go in order to make room for LaMarcus Aldridge. His contract is seemingly below what he would’ve received from another team, and it’s likely he took less to remain with a title contender and model franchise.

Not everyone can stay though:

For the Hawks, Splitter makes them bigger and gives them a staunch defensive presence in the middle with playoff experience and familiarity with coach Mike Budenholzer, a former Spurs assistant. It also provides insurance should Paul Millsap sign with Orlando.

Though Splitter got played off the court at times by Miami in the Finals, he helped the Spurs in multiple playoff series, battling the low-post threats in the Western Conference and easing the burden on Duncan.

With Splitter gone though, it’s an important obstacle out of the way to adding Aldridge.

And that news from Lakers sources that said their meeting with Aldridge went great? Welllllll…….

Somehow, the Western Conference is about to get even better.
