What did Pau Gasol do for an encore following his 40-point masterpiece against France in the EuroBasket semifinals? He “only” had 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead Spain to a 80-63 victory over Lithuania to secure the championship.
Gasol earned EuroBasket MVP honors thanks to his dominance over the course of the entire tournament. He averaged 25.6 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks while shooting 57.5 percent overall and 66.7 percent from three-point range.
This was the third time Gasol has won gold with Spain at EuroBasket, and the second time he’s won MVP. And despite the fact that he’ll be 36 next summer with a lot of miles on his legs, he’s already committed to playing in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Gasol and Spain jumped on Lithuania right from the start, opening up an 11-point lead after one quarter and going up by as many as 16 in the second quarter. Lithuania fought back to make it an eight-point game at halftime, but Spain took full control in the third quarter.
Jonas Valanciunas finished with 10 points and nine rebounds for Lithuania.
France won the third-place game over Serbia, 81-68. Rudy Gobert had 15 points and 14 rebounds.
