“Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today.” – Ben Franklin
The Philadelphia 76ers seemingly perpetual rebuild flies in the face of this advice from the city’s beloved Founding Father. However, the same can’t be said about the team’s new logos. Tomorrow is today (but also a lot like yesterday) (via Sixers.com):
The new primary logo is a throwback, but pretty simple and probably an improvement over the current logo. However, it remains similar-yet-inferior to the classic team emblem from 1977-1997 (below):
However, the real news is on the secondary logo front. Specifically, Sinister Ben Franklin. “Ballin Ben” was actually released last June, but for some inexplicable reason, the team decided against going with the aggressive diplomat. But in an enlightened and pragmatic decision that Ben would appreciate, the franchise apparently reconsidered and now he’s back!
Is this a sign that the 18-win franchise is on the rise? Because we can definitely add this logo to the the team’s very short list of ‘Solid Moves’ over the past few years. The Sixers will release new uniforms on June 18, so keep your fingers crossed that the team can incorporate Big Ben into one of its secondary jerseys. The ensemble possibilities are endless, with warm-up knickers and bifocal goggles in case Joel Embiid suffers another eye injury. Reports have reanimated Franklin rocketing up draft boards, a fierce playmaker whose inventive game is second only to D’Angelo Russell in this year’s draft class. But to clarify, this is just a logo and not a real player or mascot. (Yet!)
