Seattle’s Jewell Loyd Named 2015 WNBA Rookie of the Year

Associated Press

Seattle Storm guard Jewell Loyd is the 2015 WNBA Rookie of the Year, the league announced Thursday. Loyd just beat out New York Liberty center Kiah Stokes, earning 21 votes to Stokes’s 16. Indiana Fever center Natalie Achonwa received the other two votes.

Loyd flourished on a Storm squad that struggled throughout the season, averaging 10.7 points (best among rookies), 3.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 25.9 minutes per game. She shot 41.1 percent from the field and a scorching 90.4 percent from the line, which was tops among all rookies.

Loyd got better and better as the year went on, and she’ll be an important piece for the Storm as they look to turn things around next season.

The WNBA All-Rookie Team was also announced, with Loyd joined on the squad by teammate Ramu Tokashiki. Stokes and Liberty teammate Brittany Boyd also made it, and Achonwa and the Los Angeles Sparks’ Ana Dabovic round out the team. Here’s the voting:

Brittany Boyd New York Liberty Guard 8
Ramu Tokashiki Seattle Storm Forward 6
