Gentry will continue to help coach the Warriors during the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers before assuming his new role. The Finals begin on June 4.
Gentry was formerly the head coach of the Detroit Pistons, Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns. Jeff Van Gundy, currently a TV analyst for ESPN, was also reportedly a finalist.
The Pelicans fired Monty Williams earlier this month. Williams had coached the team since June 2010, and led them to the playoffs twice with an overall record of 173-221.
