Felton came to the Mavericks last offseason from the New York Knicks in the same deal that brought Tyson Chandler back to Dallas.
Felton barely played in the regular season, appearing in just 29 games and playing 9.7 minutes per game. He averaged 3.7 points and 1.4 assists while shooting 40.6 percent overall and 29.4 percent from three.
Felton appeared in three of the Mavericks’ first-round series games against the Houston Rockets, thanks mostly to the Rajon Rondo debacle. Felton even started one of the games, but again, he contributed very little as Dallas lost in five games.
Considering what happened this season, it makes perfect sense for Felton to exercise his player option, because he likely wouldn’t have gotten anything more than the minimum in free agency. Perhaps he could have nabbed one of the smaller exceptions, but that’s it and probably a stretch.
