New Orleans Pelicans general manager Dell Demps has spoken to Vinny Del Negro about their head coaching position, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski.
Del Negro last coached in the NBA in 2013 with the Los Angeles Clippers when the team won a franchise-record 56 games. However, the Clippers lost in the first round and Doc Rivers took over as head coach the following season.
Del Negro’s coaching career began in 2008 with the Chicago Bulls after spending several years as a front office executive with the Phoenix Suns. He went 41-41 in each of his two somewhat tumultuous seasons with the Bulls, where he caught a lot of criticism for his coaching. He also had a run-in with management and was let go after his second season.
Del Negro has a 210-184 regular-season coaching record and 10-19 postseason record.
While Del Negro has talked about the opening in New Orleans with Demps, it seems unlikely he’ll get the job. Golden State Warriors associate head coach Alvin Gentry and ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy are the two front-runners.
