Kentucky’s Karl-Anthony Towns is the consensus top player in the 2015 NBA Draft, but a recent report said Minnesota Timberwolves president and head coach Flip Saunders preferred Duke’s Jahlil Okafor with the No. 1 pick. However, Saunders has apparently changed his mind after watching a Towns workout in Los Angeles, and now there’s “no doubt” the Wolves are taking the Kentucky big man, according to Mark Heisler of Forbes.
Okafor had long been considered the top prospect in this draft, but Towns’s two-way excellence and potential moved him to No. 1 in the eyes of most. The Kentucky product also makes more sense for the Timberwolves, as he could pair with both Nikola Pekovic and Gorgui Dieng in the frontcourt. Okafor’s back-to-the-basket game may be NBA ready, but he wouldn’t fit as well with those two Wolves bigs.
In the end, both players have the potential to be great players at the NBA level, but Towns’s upside is a bit higher because of his offensive versatility and defensive upside.
