Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Flip Saunders announced that starting center Nikola Pekovic will miss the remainder of the season due to a right ankle injury.
Pekovic has missed all but 31 games this season due to injury. He last played on March 11th.
The 29-year-old center is second in pay to Ricky Rubio on the team, but he hasn’t quite earned it. He’s averaging 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. His shooting percentage is down 10 percent from his career average.
The decision does open up time for a bigger look at Gorgui Dieng. Dieng is averaging 9.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. His 17.28 PER is better than Pekovic’s 16.73.
The Timberwolves could look to move Pekovic this offseason, especially if they have the chance to draft Jahlil Okafor or Karl Anthony-Towns.
