Woj goes on to say that the Hornets are unsure of what the team will do with Matt Barnes, who is due $3.5 million next season. He’ll only be owed $1 million if waived by July 1st.
He also adds that it was research on Stephenson’s years with the Pacers that attracted Doc Rivers and the Clippers to him.
END OF UPDATE
The Los Angeles Clippers are mulling a trade that would bring over enigmatic guard Lance Stephenson from the Charlotte Hornets, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski.
The deal being discussed would send Stephenson to the Clippers for Spencer Hawes and Matt Barnes. For the Hornets, the move would clearly be addition by subtraction. Stephenson was a bust in his first season with Charlotte after signing a three-year, $27 million deal last summer. But Hawes and Barnes would be better fits on the Hornets at this point than Stephenson as both players can space the floor with their shooting ability.
Meanwhile, Stephenson can still show the boom of the boom-or-bust player her’s known as. He could give the Clippers a young, athletic wing, and a player who excelled as more of a role player than a star in Indiana. Would playing with Chris Paul and under a respected coach like Doc Rivers bring that side back out of him?
If so, it’s a move that could potentially be a huge one for the Clippers. One way or the other.
