NBA Free Agency: Robert Upshaw Signs With Lakers, Chris Douglas-Roberts to Pelicans

Undrafted big man Robert Upshaw was on the Los Angeles Lakers’ Summer League squad, and it was reported that he’d signed a contract with the team. The deal was never made official, until now, as the Lakers have announced a multi-year deal with the talented but troubled big man.

Upshaw is an extremely talented prospect, but he went undrafted after getting booted from two different schools. The 7-footer averaged 10.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.5 blocks (tops in the country) before being dismissed from Washington last season.

Upshaw didn’t play much for the Lakers in Las Vegas, but he showed some promise and the team made it a point to help him with his problems. He’ll have to prove himself in training camp to earn a spot on the roster, although it seems more likely that he’ll wind up in the D-League.

In other free agency news, Chris Douglas-Roberts is joining the New Orleans Pelicans on a two-year deal, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Shams Charania. The deal is for the veteran’s minimum.

Douglas-Roberts has bounced around the league after being drafted in the second round of the 2008 NBA Draft. He played 12 games for the Los Angeles Clippers last season, offering very little in 8.6 minutes per game.
