Melvin Hunt Joins Rick Carlisle’s Staff in Dallas

Chris Humphreys/USA TODAY Sports

Former Denver Nuggets interim head coach Melvin Hunt was a top candidate to take over the Nuggets job in a full-time capacity, but the gig ended up going to former Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Malone. Hunt wasn’t out of a job long, as he’s joining Rick Carlisle’s staff with the Dallas Mavericks:

Hunt did an admirable job with the Nuggets after Brian Shaw was fired midseason. The team was in a bad place when Shaw was fired, but the team showed a bit of a spark under Hunt. Denver faltered down the stretch, but Hunt still finished with a somewhat respectable interim record of 10-13.

Hunt has been an assistant for quite some time, working with the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers before heading to Denver. Now he joins one of the most well-respected head coaches in Carlisle, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Hunt get a full-time gig in the next couple of years.
