The Mavericks are Falling Apart

Things have gone from bad to worse for the Dallas Mavericks. A day after Rajon Rondo was benched in a Game 2 loss against the Houston Rockets, the Mavericks announced that Rondo is out indefinitely with a back injury and Chandler Parsons is done for the season and will require surgery to repair the nagging knee injury that kept him on the bench for Game 2.

Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle was rather blunt in his assessment regarding whether Rondo will play again not only in this series, but in a Dallas uniform ever again:

Rondo played just 10 minutes in the Game 2 loss, and he was yanked early in the third quarter after committing two quick fouls and earning a technical. Carlisle never mentioned any back problem after the game and said it was his call to sit Rondo, and there are plenty of people questioning the legitimacy, or at least the severity, of this back injury:

Needless to say, this Rondo thing has been a disaster in Dallas, and he has done nothing but hurt his value as a free agent this coming offseason. I’m not sure who will want him at this point, and he certainly won’t get the max contract he has been hoping for. Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski says Rondo prefers the Lakers, but they don’t even want him for big money at this point.

The Parsons injury is just a bummer. He has been dealing with the nagging knee problem for nearly a month, and it was kind of surprising that he even suited up for Game 1. The forward played 37 minutes in that game despite aggravating the injury and now needs surgery.

With the Mavericks reeling, Carlisle doesn’t have many options to turn to with his team down 2-0. Devin Harris could provide a boost if he returns from a toe injury, but it may not be enough.
