At some point, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili are going to hang it up. Duncan is 39 and Ginobili is 37, and the contracts of both players are up after this season. Considering their age, retirement after this year isn’t out of the question.
If those two San Antonio Spurs legends call it quits, the team will look to reload. Kawhi Leonard will almost certainly be back on a max contract, but the production of Duncan and Ginobili would have to be replaced. Could Memphis Grizzlies star Marc Gasol be on the radar?
According to Sean Deveney of Sporting News, Gasol would be the Spurs’ top target in free agency if Duncan and Ginobili retire.
The general consensus is that Gasol will re-sign in Memphis, but perhaps he has a change of heart if the Grizzlies don’t make a deep playoff run. There’s little chance he would look to join a rebuilding team like the Los Angeles Lakers or New York Knicks, but perhaps a move to San Antonio would be enticing. It’s still unlikely, although not out of the question.
