According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the Los Angeles Clippers are sending Matt Barnes and Spencer Hawes to the Charlotte Hornets in return for the services of Lance Stephenson. This is clearly a case of one man trying to turn another man’s trash into treasure.
The move has people on both sides wondering what on earth the team was thinking.
Not NBA Tonight tweeted:
By acquiring Lance Stephenson, Clippers President/GM Doc Rivers is clearly trying to drive Head Coach Doc Rivers out of town.

Coach Nick of BBALLBRREAKDOWN wonders:
I’m trying to picture the Clippers replacing Hawes and Barnes with Lance Stephenson. Do they think THIS trade gets them to title contention?

Matt Moore of Hardwood Paroxysm and CBS Sports asked about the other end of it:
God almighty, Hawes is under contract until 2017. At least Barnes is expiring, but with Al opting in.. they can’t improve much.

Caleb Nordgren, managing editor of Bulls by the Horns envisions defensive issues in Charlotte:
Looking forward to a Hawes/Big Al frontcourt in Charlotte that gives up 150 points/100.

In sum, it’s easy to find things to not like from both ends of the trade. But on the other hand, it’s just as easy to see why the teams made the moves they do did because of what they were giving up. And both teams are clearly hoping to get a situation where a change of scenery is all the player in question needs.
