Luol Deng Opts In to Contract with Heat

ESPN’s Marc Stein reported Monday the Miami Heat were expecting Luol Deng to opt out of his $10.2 million contract for next season, but Deng surprised everybody by instead choosing to opt in:

This is certainly big news, as the Heat now don’t have to worry about a new deal with Deng as they try to re-sign Dwyane Wade and Goran Dragic. Both Wade and Dragic are ultimately expected back, but there’s some drama going on with the Wade situation because of a difference in valuation.

Deng had a solid season in Miami, averaging 14.0 points and 5.2 rebounds in 33.6 minutes per game. His efficiency saw an uptick after several down seasons, as he shot 46.9 percent overall and 35.5 percent from three.

With Deng back plus Wade and Dragic likely back, the Heat could be quite the formidable squad if the team can stay mostly healthy. Chris Bosh should be ready at the start of next season, so watch out for Miami.
