Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers were dealt a tough blow when tests revealed a setback in the healing process of his right foot. It’s still unclear how long Embiid will be out, but Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports there’s a “legitimate chance” the big man misses the entire 2015-16 season.
Again, nothing is set in stone and Embiid is being evaluated further in order to determine the next course of action. There had been some speculation that surgery wouldn’t be needed, but it seems apparent that going under the knife again hasn’t been ruled out. The Kansas product underwent surgery on his right foot just before the 2014 NBA Draft, but that didn’t stop the Sixers from taking him third overall.
If Embiid does need surgery again and misses all of next year after missing his entire rookie season, it would be a disaster. It would still be too early to write him off entirely, but he’d be really behind the eight-ball as he tries to get his NBA career off the ground.
