That was how LeBron James described his performance after the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 106-97 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night. It’s not often that James sucks, but he truly did suck against the Hawks. James had just 18 points on 5-of-13 shooting, but the worst part of his game was the season-high nine turnovers.
Here’s James’s full quote, via Dave McMenamin of ESPN:
“As far as turnovers, I suck, I suck,” James said. “Tonight was another one of those nights. Some of them were attacking. I remember I had a couple I drove left hard, I thought Kev [Kevin Love] was going to be at a certain place, he cut, I threw it out of bounds. The first two turnovers, I got my arm grabbed. I wasn’t strong with the ball. I turned the ball over.
“My last turnover, I seen Kyrie [Irving] open in the paint. I tried to throw high, I should have thrown low. Those are careless turnovers, so it was split. Of my nine, I think five of them were unforced, four of them were attack turnovers. But, I suck. As far as me turning the ball over, I got to do better.”
The Cavaliers had a chance to move into the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference by beating the Hawks, but Cleveland fell behind big early and couldn’t finish off a comeback attempt. The Cavaliers lost the season-series 3-1, with the lone victory coming early in the season before Atlanta found its groove.
That’s not a great sign for a potential postseason series, although of course, regular season outcomes are never truly predictive of playoff outcomes. But one thing’s for sure, Cleveland can’t afford to have James turn the ball over nine times in postseason games.
