It’s no secret at this point that Portland Trail Blazers star LaMarcus Aldridge plans to look around in free agency this summer, and if Aldridge leaves, one of the Texas teams is considered the likeliest destination. Aldridge to the San Antonio Spurs has been bandied about as a possibility, but Bleacher Reports’s Ric Bucher says the Dallas Mavericks are the biggest threat to sign Aldridge away from Portland.
Bucher says the Spurs aren’t very high on Aldridge’s list, which would contradict what ESPN’s Marc Stein reported about a month ago. San Antonio could potentially clear the cap room to sign the power forward, although the possible returns of Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili would complicate matters, and the roster would likely require some other shuffling in order to have the requisite cap space necessary to sign Aldridge outright to a max deal.
The Mavericks are set to have plenty of cap space available, but it’s unclear where Aldridge is on their priority list. Dallas is said to have a lot of interest in unrestricted free agent DeAndre Jordan, and the Los Angeles Clippers big man may be a bigger priority with Dirk Nowitzki still in place and center Tyson Chandler hitting free agency. There have been rumors of a possible Jordan-for-Chandler swap, which would make some sense for both sides if Jordan wanted to go to Dallas.
The Blazers certainly want Aldridge back, but the rumblings are only getting louder about him possibly leaving for “greener pastures.” The Boston Celtics have also been rumored as a destination along with the Texas teams, so he’ll certainly have his options. This will be one of the biggest storylines of the offseason.
