LaMarcus Aldridge Agrees to Join Spurs

So this is actually happening. LaMarcus Aldridge is going home to Texas and the San Antonio Spurs:

Aldridge soon confirmed the news with his own tweet:

The chatter about Aldridge leaving the Portland Trail Blazers began several months ago, and the Spurs were immediately mentioned as a possible destination. It was going to take some sacrifice and salary cap maneuvering, but if there was any team that was going to pull this off, it would be San Antonio.

Sure enough, Tiago Splitter was traded. Danny Green and Tim Duncan agreed to take discounts, and if Manu Ginobili comes back, he’ll get a discount as well. San Antonio, the league’s model franchise, was able to add one of the best power forwards in the league without losing too much:

Aldridge will obviously be huge for this version of the Spurs, who will be a top title contender in tthe loaded Western Conference. But getting Aldridge will also ease the pain of losing Duncan and Ginobili when they finally retire. The rich just get richer, and it’s going to be fascinating to see how he’s incorporated into this team. There’s also this, which just wouldn’t be fair:

Of course, there’s also the other side, and it’s rough for the Blazers to lose one of their stars. Portland was clearly operating this offseason under the assumption Aldridge was leaving by adding a bunch of young talent in the frontcourt, and now they’ll have to figure out how to make that work. The Blazers have lost four out of five starters from last season, and it’s very likely they don’t make the playoffs.
