Kings GM Pete D’Alessandro Joins Nuggets, per Report

The writing was on the wall for Sacramento Kings general manager Pete D’Alessandro when Vlade Divac jumped over him in the hierarchy of basketball operations decision-makers in Sacramento, and now D’Alessandro is finally leaving the organization for another opportunity:

D’Alessandro returns to a place he’s worked before. The 46-year-old joined the Nuggets in 2010 and was promoted to vice president of basketball operations in 2012. He then took over as GM in Sacramento in 2013, but the situation there was mostly a mess. Mike Malone was hired as head coach before D’Alessandro took his position, and those two had a difference in philosophy, which helped lead to Malone’s ouster earlier this year.

But then D’Alessandro’s relationship with ownership soured when Divac was brought in. D’Alessandro was offered to become the athletic director at his alma mater, St. John’s, where he also would’ve reunited with Chris Mullin, who had worked as an advisor in Sacramento before taking the head coaching job at St. John’s.

Instead, D’Alessandro will help run the Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche, a move Nuggets GM Tim Connelly endorses:

Considering this move, it seems unlikely Malone will be hired as head coach in Denver, where he was a top candidate. Perhaps this helps Mike D’Antoni’s case, as D’Alessandro is a fan of playing more uptempo basketball.
