Everybody is anticipating Kevin Durant’s free agency next summer, and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith has already talked about the possibility of Durant joining the New York Knicks (with Kobe Bryant) or the Los Angeles Lakers. Durant took exception to this, specifically the Lakers rumor, telling Anthony Slater of The Oklahoman that Smith is lying:
“I don’t talk to Stephen A Smith at all. Nobody in my family, my friends, they don’t talk to Stephen A Smith. So he’s lying.”
Durant wasn’t done:
“If you ask me a question, I’ll talk about them. But like I said before, I have people who I talk to about everything and I know for a fact they didn’t talk to him, so he’s making up stories.”
It’s pretty great that KD just came out and called out Smith for peddling this information. There are plenty of erroneous reports that get put out there by the media, but there’s often not much accountability.
Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Durant absolutely will not sign with the Lakers next summer. If the young core really impresses this season, they could look more attractive to Durant, and there’s obviously that allure of playing in Hollywood. But for right now, Durant is focused on his season with the Thunder and doesn’t have time for people spreading falsehoods.
UPDATE: Smith is upset and stands by his reporting:
