Hawks Take Kelly Oubre Jr. at No.15, Trade Him to Wizards

With the 15th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, the Atlanta Hawks have selected freshman swingman Kelly Oubre Jr. However, Oubre will go to the Washington Wizards in a trade:

Oubre has all the tools to be successful playing either wing position in the NBA, but needs to gain consistency on both ends before he’s able to make a big impact in the league.

Oubre stands 6-7 with a 7-2 wingspan, tools that give him a lot of potential on the defensive end. He showed promise defensively last year with 1.1 steals per game in only 21 minutes per game, while grabbing a solid 5.0 rebounds per game. The youngster has potential as a 3-and-D type player, shooting 35.8 percent last season from behind the arc.

But Oubre is incredibly raw, and he struggled to see time early on at Kansas. Defensively, he can guard both wing positions, but offensively he’s much more of a small forward at this stage as he lacks the ball handling ability to create for himself and the awareness to create for others. He’ll have to gain consistency from deep to mask some of these issues.

Overall, Oubre is attractive as a mid-first-round pick thanks to his high upside and physical tools for the position. He’s a terror on the fast break, but must gain consistency in the half court. Don’t be surprised if he spends some time in the D-League before potentially making an impact down the line.

NBA comparison: James Young

2014-15 stats: 9.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.1 spg (44.4 FG%, 35.8 3P%, 71.8 FT%)
