Jonas Valanciunas Suffers Broken Hand vs. Lakers

Jayne Kamin-Oncea/USA TODAY Sports

The Toronto Raptors ended their three-game losing streak by beating the Los Angeles Lakers 102-91 on Friday night, but the Raptors still suffered a loss when starting center Jonas Valanciunas left the game with a hand injury. The team announced shortly after that Valanciunas suffered a broken left hand.

The injury occurred at the end of the first half when Kobe Bryant fouled Valanciunas under the basket. The big man had three points, three rebounds and two assists in 18 minutes before the injury. He’ll undergo further testing to determine how much time he’ll miss.

This is a tough break for Valanciunas, who’s averaging 12.7 points and 9.3 rebounds on 55.6 percent shooting this season. If he has to miss a significant amount of time, that’ll put more pressure on the likes of Bismack Biyombo, Luis Scola and Patrick Patterson to deliver. The Raptors would also likely turn to a good amount of small ball to counter any absence of their young center.
