Jahlil Okafor to Play Friday After Boston Incident

Thanksgiving is usually a quiet NBA news day, but that changed this year when TMZ posted a story accompanied with video that featured Philadelphia 76ers rookie big man Jahlil Okafor getting into a fight after the Sixers’ loss to the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night.

According to the TMZ report, the incident was sparked by some heckling in Okafor’s direction about the Sixers’ struggles on the court. The 19-year-old didn’t take kindly to it and wound up punching a man in the face.

Despite this, the big man will play against the Houston Rockets on Friday night:

Sixers head coach Brett Brown said there will be some sort of punishment doled out:

Okafor himself knows that he made a mistake:

It’s a bit surprising that Okafor will be suiting up Friday, but perhaps he’ll receive a suspension from the team down the road. Even though he admitted his mistake and seems remorseful, that kind of behavior can’t go without stiff punishment, no matter how young he is.

Okafor’s play, at least some areas of it, has been one of the few beacons of light during Philadelphia’s terrible start. He’s averaging 18.4 points and 8.1 rebounds in 33.4 minutes per game.

The Sixers will try to avoid an NBA-record 27th straight loss in Houston.
