The Golden State Warriors were hoping to get a deal done with Draymond Green right at the start of free agency, but it appears talks have broken down for the time being, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Marc Spears. Green is now open to talking with other teams, with his hometown Detroit Pistons a likely possibility.
Of course, this means very little, as the Warriors can still match any offer sheet Green signs with another team. It’s still a bit surprising that there wasn’t an agreement on a max contract considering Green’s value to Golden State. After all, he was the Defensive Player of the Year runner-up this past season and was a key part of a championship roster.
But perhaps Golden State offered just short of a max, or maybe there’s currently a disagreement over the number of years. Green could be looking for a shorter deal and the Warriors wanted to lock him up long term. At any rate, he’s almost certainly not going anywhere, unless Golden State is drunk.
