Contract Details for Hassan Whiteside, J.R. Smith

Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside broke out last season, and the big man is on a cheap deal for this upcoming season. The contract was only $245,337 guaranteed until Oct. 31 and then $490,674 guaranteed until Dec. 1, but the Heat have now fully guaranteed his $981,348 deal, according to Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders.

That certainly makes sense considering Whiteside earned that deal with his play last season. While he had his issues before, the 26-year-old 7-footer averaged 11.8 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.6 blocks in 48 games last season, notching a 26.26 PER in the process.

Assuming Whiteside continues his stellar play, he’ll get a huge payday when the cap rises next summer.

In other contract news, some more details have come out about J.R. Smith‘s two-year, $10-plus million deal:

It turns out the guarantee date for this upcoming season is next week:

So Smith basically has $7 million guaranteed on this deal, which is a bit more than the $6.4 million player option he turned down. While this is certainly an unusual contract, there’s a decent chance Smith just opts out of his contract for next year anyway and looks to secure a new deal when the cap rises.
