When the Sacramento Kings went through their hot mess phase over the summer, Kentucky head coach John Calipari’s name surfaced as an option for a dual head coaching/executive role. Nothing came of it, but now Calipari’s name is coming up again as the Kings continue to face turmoil with George Karl as head coach.
Bleacher Report’s Ric Bucher says the belief is Kings owner Vivek Ranadive will take another run at Calipari and make a Godfather offer. Bucher also says that if Karl gets fired in-season, Vanadive wants to make assistant coach Nancy Lieberman the head coach in the short term, which would make her the first female head coach in NBA history.
However, multiple reports have come out since Bucher’s saying there’s no truth to the Calipari rumors. James Ham of CSN Bay Area has one. As does Kurt Helin of Pro Basketball Talk. As does Sean Cunningham of ABC10 Sacramento.
Based on all that, it sure seems like Calipari to the Kings isn’t something that’ll actually happen. And why would it happen? Calipari has a cushy gig at Lexington, and the only way he’d consider leaving is if he got a ton of power. But there’s no way Vlade Divac would be cool with that, so it’s a rumor that just doesn’t make much sense.
