In news that was totally expected, Dallas Mavericks forward Chandler Parsons won’t play in the team’s opener against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night. However, ESPN’s Jeff Goodman says Parsons should be ready to go soon.
With Parsons not yet ready to play because of knee surgery, the Mavericks are expected to trot out a starting lineup of Deron Williams, Raymond Felton, Wesley Matthews, Dirk Nowitzki and Zaza Pachulia. Again, the fact that Matthews is playing is a minor miracle after he tore his Achilles in March, but of course he (and Williams) will be on a minutes restriction, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.
Parsons will surely start on a minutes restriction as well when he returns from his injury. The Mavericks are expecting big things out of the swingman, and they’ll need him healthy for most of the season if they want to have any chance of returning to the postseason. The same can be said for Matthews, which is a frightening proposition in the loaded Western Conference.
As good as Parsons and Matthews are when healthy, these are serious injuries they’re coming back from, so it’s going to be a tall order to ask so much of them in order to stay competitive.
