All Quiet on the Joel Embiid Front

Bill Streicher/USA TODAY Sports

On July 11, the Philadelphia 76ers put out a statement saying Joel Embiid needed another surgery on his right foot and that the procedure would be done in the next seven-to-10 days. It’s now Aug. 3 and there hasn’t been a peep from the team about Embiid’s status:

There was a report from Bob Cooney of the Philadelphia Daily News on July 21 that said Embiid re-broke the navicular bone in his right foot. That’s the bone he broke right before the Sixers took him third overall in the 2014 NBA Draft. But again, there’s been nothing from the team:

There’d be little reason to not announce a successful surgery if it happened already, so it’s probably safe to assume that it hasn’t happened yet. Perhaps they haven’t found the doctor they want yet. Perhaps they’re seeking more opinions. Perhaps Embiid simply wants to delay the surgery.

Whatever the case, it’s certainly a bizarre situation. Hopefully Embiid can get past all this at some point and be healthy enough to make an impact in the NBA, whenever that may be.
