The Philadelphia 76ers have picked up the third-year options on Joel Embiid and Nik Stauskas, as well as the fourth-year option on Nerlens Noel.
Whenever a team picks up these options on rookie deals, it’s usually not notable. And in the case of Noel and Stauskas, it really isn’t notable, even though the latter hasn’t played a second for Philadelphia.
But in the case of Embiid, it’s slightly more newsworthy. That’s because the big man has undergone two season-ending foot surgeries in consecutive years, and it’s looking doubtful (at least at the moment) that he’ll ever live up to his immense potential.
Of course, that doesn’t mean the Sixers are ready to give up on a significant part of “The Process.” Philadelphia has already spent so much time and effort in Embiid, so they obviously aren’t going to bail on that now even though he hasn’t played a game yet and has reportedly given the team some trouble. The Sixers are going to see this thing through in case he ever does get healthy and lives up (or even gets close) to that lofty potential.
