Houston Rockets point guard Ty Lawson will be suspended two games because of DUI charges from earlier this year, according to Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski. Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle confirmed the news and said Lawson will begin his suspension when the Rockets host the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday night.
Lawson has been charged with two DUIs in the past year, and he had to go to rehab after the second one. The Rockets acquired the 28-year-old soon after that second DUI, and part of that trade involved making his $13.2 million contract for next season non-guaranteed.
Thus far, the Lawson experiment in Houston has been an unmitigated disaster. He’s averaging 5.9 points and 4.2 assists while shooting a wretched 32.9 percent from the floor, and he’s only getting worse. He’s completely failed to mesh with James Harden in the backcourt, and now Woj says the Rockets are looking to trade the point guard.
It’s hard to peg what kind of value Houston could even get back in a trade at this point. Perhaps a team desperate for a point guard thinks Lawson could flourish again as the primary ball handler and takes a chance on him, especially considering he has that non-guaranteed contract for next year. If it didn’t work out, that team could just cut bait.
